Public Health Rally

recognising

Multiple Chemical Sensitivity

Monday 8 October 2007
12 noon to 2pm

Department of Health and Ageing
11 Waymouth Street, Adelaide

Multiple Chemical Sensitivity is a chronic medical condition where people are made sick by common chemicals in everyday products, often at levels assessed as safe by chemical regulators.

MCS is frequently associated with Chronic Fatigue Syndrome.

For several years the Department of Health and Ageing’s Office of Chemical Safety has been promising a review of national policy on MCS. To date there have been no practical outcomes from these assurances.

People with MCS have been excluded from any meaningful consultation process and they continue to be denied equitable access to basic services such as healthcare, housing and education.

In 2005 a Parliamentary Inquiry into MCS in South Australia found that “MCS is very real” and that “up to 6 percent of the population may have MCS”. The Inquiry recommended a range of groundbreaking public health and disability access reforms recognising MCS. Despite these findings the Commonwealth Department of Health and Ageing continues to ignore the needs of citizens with MCS.

The rally calls on the Federal Government to urgently address the growing public health problem of MCS.

This is a smoke- and fragrance-free event
Out of respect for people with multiple chemical sensitivity please avoid wearing strong personal fragrances such as perfume, aftershave and essential oils when attending this meeting.
