Closer Than You Think information now online

August 31, 2005

Closer Than You ThinkSACOSS is South Australia’s non-government peak representative body for community services organizations and on March 18, 2005, launched a broad-based anti-poverty campaign, Closer Than You Think. The campaign will raise awareness and change perceptions of poverty and hardship in South Australia.

Closer Than You Think will provide a simple blueprint for action to eliminate poverty in South Australia, with a set of targets aligned to South Australia’s strategic plan. A draft blueprint was presented at the campaign conference on July 28 and 29, 2005, and input from conference delegates over those two days is being incorporated into a final blueprint to be released by SACOSS in September. This blueprint will then shape the continuing direction of the Closer Than You Think campaign.

Poverty and social exclusion are poorly understood in Australia, and compared to the early 1970s poverty in this country is now more widespread and inequality is greater. The United Nations regards poverty as a violation of human rights – and yet almost a quarter of all South Australians are living on or below the poverty line.

The Closer Than You Think campaign will engage, inform and galvanize key members of the community, education, employment and political arenas; social welfare experts from around Australia; and members of the community who are themselves affected by poverty.

For more information or to contribute ideas, contact Celia Brissenden, Communications Officer, SACOSS, phone 8226 411 or Karen Grogan, Executive Director, SACOSS, phone 8226 4111.

Speeches, papers and presentations from the Closer Than You Think conference last month are now loaded on the campaign’s website. Download all the plenary speeches are available as transcripts and audio files; video highlights of the Premier and the Hon Bob Hawke AC’s speeches; breakout presentations are gradually being added, mostly as PDF files.
