MJA advice on graded exercise

August 1, 2005

eMJAThe Medical Journal of Australia has published a new article on that controversial issue, graded exercise.

We asked Dr Peter Del Fante to comment on it and here’s what he said:

“The advice is sensible, and it is important not to exceed the recommended heart rate – nor is it necessary to aim to achieve this heart rate in the first instance – but it is something to aim for though. It’s important to start very gently, and slowly increase. I advise in the first few weeks not to exceed 5 minutes – ie, work within the anaerobic range before entering aerobic exercise (after 5 minutes). I also advise at least a 5 minute absolute rest between initial attempts at exercising (ie, up to 5 minutes on followed by 5 minutes off) and repeat cycle as tolerated in any one session.”
