National Inquiry on Employment and Disability

September 1, 2005

Disability Rights

The Human Rights and Equal Opportunity Commission has released an Interim Report of the National Inquiry into Employment and Disability titled Workability: People with Disability in the Open Workplace.

The main aims of the Inquiry are to identify the primary reasons for low participation and employment rates for people with disabilities, and to work towards practical, achievable solutions.

Feedback to the Inquiry so far suggests that a lack of quality information, the costs of participation and employment, and the risks if a job didn't work out were the main issues of concern to both employees with disability and employers.

The Interim Report addresses these issues and makes Interim Recommendations that seek to address these primary concerns. The inquiry is continuing to take submissions until September 20.
