Q Fever, Rickettsia and ME/CFS – hear our local world figure

Thursday 3 May 2007

Fibromyalgia Well Spring FoundationOur next meeting is on Saturday 12 May at DIRC, 195 Gilles St at 2pm. The speaker is Emeritus Professor Barrie Marmion AM. Prof Marmion is one of those prophets without honour in their own country, one might say. He has for many years studied Q Fever – a condition which has been linked to the onset of ME/CFS. He has been working with other researchers investigating Rickettsia, a tick-borne condition which has also been a trigger for ME/CFS.

Now this might seem of little relevance to most of you. About one in six people with ME/CFS are believed to have had it triggered by these conditions. But this happens to be an area where Australia – courtesy not least of Prof Marmion – leads the world. And at the research forum one of the points of agreement was that were centres of specialisation in ME/CFS to be established around the world, it makes sense for them to specialise to some degree. So it could be that were such a research centre to be established in Australia – and it’s something which Christine Hunter AM has been lobbying for  – it might well focus to some extent on Q Fever and Rickettsia. In that sense and for other reasons this is a talk for everyone interested in understanding the pattern of chronic ill-health which can follow from an initial bout of illness – in short anyone with ME/CFS.

Professor Marmion is an impressive speaker and I urge you to attend. It’s also a way of marking the Big Day in the international ME/CFS calendar – Awareness Day. The day – to remind you – was chosen in honour of that great person who did great things whilst suffering from ME/CFS (so they believe): Florence Nightingale. It’s her birthday.

Two things. First, there’ll be no charge for members and a gold coin for non-members. We’re continuing our efforts to reward those who have loyally paid out to support our common endeavour for the thousands of people with ME/CFS in South Australia.

Second: we would greatly appreciate if you would ring or email us to let us know that you’re planning to come. We just don’t know at this stage of the year whether we might have more than usual attendees at our seminar series. The public meeting/research forum has given us a boost: we’ve 50 plus new members; and our seminars are better organised and promoted than in the last few years. DIRC is a smallish venue. So let us know and, if numbers look large-ish, we’ll book a bit of extra space there if we can.
