Flu vaccines

Thursday 30 August 2007

NeedleSome members have contacted us regarding influenza vaccines, given the current number and severity of flu cases in Adelaide.

Some members have not yet had a vaccination this year and are wondering whether they should. There is no one right answer to this question.

Dr Peter Del Fante, medical adviser to ME/CFS Society SA, advises that Fluvax is not a live vaccine, and as such is generally tolerated well by most of his CFS patients, but can cause a relapse in some. He adds that another factor to bear in mind is that this year’s flu season bugs are more potent than ususal. On the other hand, bear in mind that technically what is regarded as the traditional flu season will end sometime in October.

Hence it is a case for each person with their GP and/or specialist to weigh up the benefits provided by vaccination against the possible risks, given the patient’s medical history.
