Advertising campaign – funny or cruel?

Sunday 23 December 2007

The FIX adAn advertising campaign for ninemsn’s The Fix has been brought to the Society’s attention by a member who feels that it is insensitive and an insult to those suffering from CFS.

The ad campaign

The series of ads begins on home page of The Fix, a website devoted to celebrities and celebrity-watching:

The Fix (external link)

The FIX adThere is a link near the bottom of that page to another page that offers readers a quiz (see picture right) to determine if they are suffering from “Celebrity Worship Syndrome”, or “CWS”:

Are You Obsessed? (external link)

On the Are You Obsessed? page are various links, of which two (at the top of the page) are particularly contentious.

One is a page describing the “syndrome”:

What is CWS? (external link)

The FIX adThe other is The Camilla Files which purports to be a profile of someone called “Camilla” (see picture right) who is suffering from “CWS”:

Complaints

If you feel strongly enough about The Fix’s “CWS” advertising campaign to make a complaint, then you can direct your complaint to Australia’s Advertising Standards Bureau:

A previous ad campaign

The Fix’s advertising campaign reminds us of a previous ad campaign (in 1999) that involved a billboard advertising Hamilton Island (see picture right).

A complaint about it was lodged with the Advertising Standards Bureau and a decision was made in favour of the complainant:

Billboard scandal – complaint upheld!
