Interested in yoga?

Saturday 24 May 2008

Josie GriggJosie Grigg (Dip. Yoga, B. Eng. Hons.) (pictured) is a yoga instructor who runs BodyPrayer which describes itself as a “Christian Yoga/Pilates style body conditioning class”.

Josie is inviting people with ME/CFS to become involved in a new yoga class that she is forming in the near future, and has sent us a message outlining her plans:

I am a yoga teacher practicing in the Adelaide Hills with a particular interest in using yoga to aide the body to heal itself.

In my classes over the past few years I have had several chronic fatigue and post polio sufferers come and find benefit in the class, and so I have decided to run a 6-week course specifically for chronic fatigue sufferers.

The content will cover breathing techniques, gentle stretching, rebuilding muscle tone, balance and simple meditation techniques. I believe that these skills improve general well being by: a) improving oxygenation levels in the blood; b) strengthening important muscles such as those around the lungs (especially important in fighting respiratory disease); c) stimulating blood and lymph supply to muscle groups that may not be used in daily activity; d) building muscle tone - particularly in the torso area supporting the spine and hips, aiding in improved posture which then improves organ health; e) improved brain function - by supplying better quality blood to the brain, and teaching it to effectively rest through meditation.

At the moment I am looking at basing the course in the Marion Council area, and running it in July-August on a Wednesday morning and potentially a Tuesday evening as well. The cost would depend upon the venue but would be $50. This will cover the classes and class notes. I will look into getting some funding to support the progam with the aim of making it as cheap as possible.

My purpose in writing to you is not only to inform you of the program but to invite you to be involved. This could be at any level from simply adding it to a list of events, to suggesting venues, times, content that you feel could be valuable. If done in conjunction with the ME/CFS Society, we would increase the profile of the society within the Marion area and potentially use the concept down the track as a fund raiser type activity.

Please let me know what you think.

I look forward to hearing from you.

Regards,
Josie Grigg
