A NICE dilemma?

Monday 22 December 2008

ME Action UKMargaret Williams has written an article for MEActionUK centering on the UK’s NICE Guidelines:

ME Action UK: A NICE DILEMMA?

The article discusses quite a few topics, including:

ME/CFS in the US

ME/CFS in the UK

CBT/GET does not prevent death from ME/CFS

NICE “Guidelines” are to become legally enforceable in 2009

Some failures by NICE to adhere to its own Guideline Development Manual

Introduction of “Consensus” for CG53

Failure of NICE to adhere to the Guideline Development Manual in the selection of GDG members

Consideration of the known views of members of the Guideline Development Group (GDG)

Peter Mitchell, the Society’s Honorary Secretary, offers a comment on Margaret’s article:

The article almost needs a health warning: “Please be aware that you are likely to feel raised blood pressure and angry flushes as you read this letter.”

It is printed without prejudice, and assumes that the original writer, Margaret Williams, and the publisher MEActionUK have taken responsibility to check all claims.

What she claims would be great fodder for a defamation case if not provable, so one assumes she is confident of it all – which would appear to make the actions of those concerned (eg in the ‘selection’ of the GDG) all the more scandalous.
