Eric the Postie – latest updateFriday 14 August 2009
The ME Association has the latest on Eric's current exploits: The MEA's Aberdeen to Australia cyclist hits the home straight... almost! Eric Smart is almost on the home straight of his mammoth cycle ride from his home city of Aberdeen in Scotland to Adelaide in south Australia. He's reached the Indonesian island of Bali – with his next test being a ride through 1,500 miles of desert in the heart of Australia to his ultimate destination. He's resting up in a cheap and clean hotel at Kuta near the airport before flying to Darwin, the capital city of Australia's Northern Territory, on August 12. "He's got a nice room with a balcony and a swimming pool below, and he says there's no reason to move from them until he flies out. It will give him time to catch up with his blog which has been sadly neglected for the past few months", says Mrs Audrey Smart, his mother. "When he gets to Darwin, he'll be following the Stuart Highways all the way through to Alice Springs and then on to Adelaide. His visa is in order for Australia so there's no stopping him now!" Eric's last big story on his blog related his journey through Georgia after leaving Turkey – having been refused permission to enter Iran at the first couple of tries. By the time the Iran visa eventually came through, Eric was committed to making his 'left hand down a bit' detour through Georgia. Since then, he has pedalled through Azerbaijan, Pakistan, India, Thailand, Malaysia and the Indonesian island of Sumatra. Once he's finished his cycle ride, he's talking about visiting New Zealand and America before returning home. Eric is collecting money for The ME Association while on the road. If you would like to make a small donation, please visit his online fundraising page by clicking here. The above originally appeared here. And you can catch up with Eric’s progress at Google Maps.
