Probiotic Supplements Ease Chronic Fatigue Syndrome Symptoms

A study conducted at the University of Toronto has uncovered that supplementing a diet with daily probiotics can help with symptoms of anxiety disorders for patients suffering from Chronic Fatigue Syndrome. This study was produced by a team under the leadership of A. Venket Rao. this work was based on a two month study, which demonstrated a significant decline in the subjects symptoms relating to anxiety.

Are you confused about the connection between probiotic and CFS? It has been revealed that subjects with CFS are also often afflicted with digestive disorders and these disorders are frequently teamed up with a decline or near absence of good friendly bacteria in the intestines which keeps the lid on populations of disease causing bacteria. That bad bacteria in the gut has already been linked with greater incidence of mood disorders and depression, and scientists feel that bacteria levels be connected with our behavior. Probiotics supplements are naturally sourced live bacteria – such as Lactobacillus or Bifidobacteria. Probiotic supplements can correct the balance with good bacterial or beneficial intestinal flora. Once again it’s shown that intestinal health has far reaching overall health implications.

This research was conducted on subjects suffering from CFS – Chronic fatigue syndrome, a condition that displays many symptoms, including ongoing fatigue- and for almost half of those affected – anxiety, sleep difficulties and depression. Treatment (based on the connection between the digestive issues and CFS) with probiotics supplements showed that after two months of probiotics use, the individuals in the test group showed good results in dealing with disorders such as depression and anxiety.

The subjects who took the probiotics on a daily basis had higher levels of Lactobacillus and Bifidobacteria and at the same time exhibted fewer signs of anxiety. These patients also demonstrated digestive improvements such as a decrease in inflammation, bloating and gas. They have published their findings in the journal -”BioMed Central”.

If the indications from this study hold up under further research and probiotic supplements do turn out to be viable option, it will be good news for sufferers. Unlike the usual drugs , which can create a host of unwanted side effects, probiotics might offer a safe and easy alternative. “The findings are huge,” said study co-author Alison C. Bested, who continued to say the study subjects felt calmer and better able to cope with their illness, were sleeping better and feeling less anxious.
