BPAC recommends to FDA to add CFS screening question

Sunday 19 December 2010

The CFIDS Association of America reports (via Co-Cure):

BPAC Recommends to FDA to Add CFS Screening Question

The CFIDS Association of America
December 16, 2010

At Tuesday's meeting of the FDA Blood Products Advisory Committee, the panel voted 9-4 to recommend to FDA that a screening question about past/present CFS diagnosis be added to the medical history form given to all potential blood donors.

If adopted by FDA, this question would be the basis of the first regulatory policy to indefinitely defer individuals who report a past/present CFS diagnosis. The FDA usually, but does not always, acts on the guidance of its advisory committees.

Amy Dockser-Marcus of the Wall Street Journal reported on the vote in a story posted online on Tuesday night, and in more abbreviated form on page A2 of the newspaper on Wednesday. Bloomberg News also reported on the meeting outcome, as did Nature.
