The woman who is allergic to cleaning productsThursday 11 August 2011
The woman who is allergic to cleaning products For most people, an allergy to cleaning products might be welcomed - but for Mary-Grace Milner it makes housework a potentially deadly activity. The 40-year-old only has to walk down the detergents aisle in the supermarket for her to start feeling ill. ‘I have collapsed before and get blurred vision, severe nose bleeds, sore lungs and a cough after a bad exposure,’ she said. ‘I tend to steer clear of the chemical aisles in every store. I can go fairly near them but I cannot walk down them – the stench is overwhelming.’ She was first struck down with sensitivity to chemicals in November when an anti-bacterial wipe triggered a reaction. The mother of one, who has a list of 400 items to avoid, has now rid her home of conventional cleaning products. ‘Despite the condition, I’m very house proud and my home is probably the cleanest anyone will ever see,’ said Ms Milner, from Rochford, Essex. Her rare chemical intolerance is known commonly as multiple chemical sensitivity. ‘Most women think it sounds great to have a medical excuse not to do the housework but it can make life very difficult when you are a busy mum,’ she said. The clinical support officer first realised all was not well when a solvent used by a handyman caused her heart to begin racing uncontrollably and plunged her blood pressure to a drastic low. The next day, an anti-bacterial wipe used in the kitchen by husband Lee sparked an even more dangerous reaction – despite her being upstairs. She now uses all-natural products to clean her home and has replaced scores of personal care products with organic ones.

Wife allergic to housework A WOMAN had to give up doing the housework because chemicals in the cleaners made her ill. The slightest whiff of bleach, soap powders and sprays sent Mary-Grace Milner spiralling into a severe allergic reaction. Her skin became inflamed, her vision went blurred and her blood pressure soared. She could not even set foot in the cleaning aisle of her local supermarket. Mary-Grace, 40, was first struck down with the condition, known as Multiple Chemical Sensitivity, last November when her husband used an anti-bacterial wipe. She said: “I have a list of 400 cleaning and personal products that I need to avoid. I have collapsed and get blurred vision, nosebleeds, sore lungs and a cough – sometimes all at the same time – after a bad exposure.” Now, after four months of homeopathy and acupuncture, the mother-of-one, from Rochford, Essex, can clean her house again, using just organic products. She said: “It’s been a truly remarkable transformation.”
