5 Celebrities with Fibromyalgia
Susan Flannery Susan Flannery is a New Jersey-based actress known to many as one of the original and current cast members of the hit TV soap opera “Bold and the Beautiful.” In 2007, Susan made news headlines after she asked the show for medical leave, in an attempt to treat her ongoing battle with fibromyalgia. Thankfully, the medical leave was short lived, and Susan continues to work on the show, despite her chronic condition.
Rosie Hamlin Rosie Hamlin, the lead singer of a popular band in the 60s called Rosie and the Originals, also suffers from fibromyalgia. In 2004, Hamlin appeared on the cover of Fibromyalgia Aware magazine where she discussed her struggle to overcome debilitating pain while touring, as a result of fibromyalgia. Though she loves singing, she knew she could no longer continue to tour, and eventually decided to take on a new career path—painting! The former singer credits religion, painting, and fibromyalgia conventions for helping her cope with the pain.
Sinead O’Connor Controversial Irish Singer Sinead O’Connor joins the short list of celebrities revealing how fibromyalgia has impacted her career. In 2003, O’Connor revealed in an interview with Dublin’s Hot Press magazine that fibromyalgia was a key factor in her announcing her retirement from music. The singer admitted to having a high pain threshold; she just couldn’t handle the fatigue that came with it.
Frances Winfield Bremer Frances Winfield Bremer, the wife of Ambassador L. Paul Bremer III, was diagnosed with fibromyalgia 28 years ago. In 2007, she was declared the official spokesperson for the chronic disorder by the National Fibromyalgia Association. She and her husband hope to bring awareness to the organization on an international level by making joint media appearances, as well as, appearing on the cover of Fibromyalgia Aware magazine to help motivate more people into finding a cure.
Michael James Hastings Michael James Hastings, an actor whose claim to fame is his recurring role as Captain Mike on the hit TV series “The West Wing,” suffers from fibromyalgia. At the age of 30, Hastings was diagnosed with fibromyalgia which eventually forced him into early retirement. In 2004, Hastings used his status as Captain Mike to bring awareness to the condition by teaming up with a nutritional company called Enzymatic Therapy. Mike promoted their supplements geared toward people suffering from the chronic pain disorder by touring health food stores throughout Los Angeles, and providing customers with information about vitamin supplements used to help reduce symptoms of fibromyalgia.
