Autism risk from Fibromyalgia and CFS drugsMonday 18 July 2011 About.com's Adrienne Dellwo reports:
Serotonin Series Research Brief A new study suggests that selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs) taken during pregnancy may increase your risk of having a baby with an autism spectrum disorder. SSRIs are a common treatment for people with fibromyalgia and chronic fatigue syndrome. In the study, researchers say the incidence of autism was moderately higher in children of women who took SSRIs during pregnancy, especially in the first trimester. They conclude that the consequences of discontinuing medications during pregnancy must be weighed against the increased autism risk. Serotonin & Fetal Development Research from earlier this year demonstrated that serotonin is produced by the placenta and plays an important role in brain development. Researchers believe that serotonin levels early in fetal development could have long-term implications on neurological health. However, they note that further studies are needed to confirm this finding. If you're concerned about taking SSRIs or other medications during pregnancy, talk to your doctor about the risks.
