Allergy diagnosis in Westcliff helped save woman's life

Relieved her ordeal is over – Mary Milner

Allergy diagnosis in Westcliff helped save woman's life

FOR 28 years Mary Milner would regularly collapse when she smelt perfume, bleach or car fumes.

Mary, 40, nearly died in August last year because of her severe chemical allergy.

She was in and out of Southend Hospital and put on a range of drugs as her blood pressure continually spiralled out of control.

She would feel sick, suffer puffy skin, blurred vision and a whole host of other symptoms.

But after being diagnosed, she has turned her life around.

She doesn’t wear perfumes and only uses organic soaps. Instead of using bleach and other chemical cleaning sprays she uses bicarbonate of soda, vinegar and lemon juice to clean the house.

Mary said: “It was a harrowing ordeal.

“People see it as in your head, but it is a serious problem and it affects you in horrible ways.

“I collapsed in Turkey the year before last. I would often feel sick, have nosebleeds and suffer low blood pressure with high spikes. At my worst, I would open the window and smell car fumes and feel ill.

“We had a handyman at the house and I felt awful because of a solvent he used.

“Then I had a pain in my groin last August, felt unwell and then collapsed at home.

“My son found me and shouted for help and my husband called the paramedics.”

Doctors diagnosed a problem with Mrs Milner’s heart and put her on a range of drugs, but she suffered continued to feel ill.

She eventually decided to try something different and visited homeopath Keith Enever, who runs the Southbourne Annandale Allergy and Back Clinic, in Westcliff.

Mr Enever diagnosed multiple chemical sensitivity and advised Mrs Milner, of Lingfield Drive, Rochford, of a range of products she should aim to avoid using.

The intervention from Mr Enever has helped her manage the condition.

Mrs Milner said her husband Lee, 47, son Theo, eight, and mother Lucy O’Boyle, 65, have all been hugely supportive.

Mr Enever, 58, said: “These sort of things are more common than people think, but Mary’s condition was particularly extreme.

“I screened and tested Mary for a range of things and diagnosed the chemical sensitivity.

“Then it was all about helping her immune system, by telling her to avoid certain chemicals and to eat certain foods to strengthen her immune system.”
