Do FM sufferers have lower pain thresholds?Thursday 18 August 2011 From US publication the Buffalo Examiner:
Do FM Sufferers Have Lower Pain Thresholds? Some pain researchers have put forth a theory that people with Fibromyalgia have a lower threshold for pain because of increased sensitivity in the brain to pain signals. This problem, known as Central Sensitization, causes people with FM to deal with Allodyina [sic]. Allodyina is pain from something that normally would not cause pain, such as clothing or sheets rubbing against the skin. Even something as light as wind or a slight breeze on a patient’s skin causes pain. This phenomenon is something that these researchers believe is linked to Fibromyalgia. Interestingly enough, it is also associated with Chronic Regional Pain Syndrome (CRPS)—a.k.a. Reflex Sympathetic Dystrophy (RSD)—as well as some other pain diseases. Research is ongoing, but they are learning more about FM all the time. Studies and theories such as this one help come up with better ideas to ease the pain that patients with FM deal with. Other possible causes of Fibromyalgia include genetics and physical or emotional trauma. To read more about this theory go to www.mayoclinic.com/health/fibromyalgia/DS00079/DSECTION=causes and chronicfatigue.about.com/od/glossary/g/allodynia.htm.
