We'll tough it out to support mum

We'll tough it out to support mum

Published on Friday 6 July 2012 17:00

TWO brothers from Lower Largo are about to take on a 12-mile assault course, dubbed the ‘toughest event on the planet’.

Liam and Kieran Mika, who are 27 and 23 respectively, will be attempting to complete the Tough Mudder, a British Special Forces designed challenge at Drumlanrig Castle, outside Dumfries, on July 15.

With 25 military obstacles, the course is said to be an extreme test of physical endurance, stamina, teamwork and camaraderie.

However the pain the brothers go through while completing it will only serve as a sharp reminder of why they are doing it in the first place, as they are aiming to raise funds and awareness for the charity Fibromyalgia UK.

Fibromyalgia is a musculoskeletal pain and fatigue disorder – which their mum Fiona Mika was diagnosed with in 2009.

Because of the condition, Fiona suffers from constant burning, throbbing, shooting and stabbing pains, and the fatigue is so severe she was forced to give up her job of 30 years as a travel-agent.

Liam told the Mail he and his brother just want to give something back to their mum, who has done a lot for them, and make her proud. He said: “You will not find a more generous and caring person.

“The condition is not well publicised and was only identified in 1990. Physicians continue to research and develop treatments and medications for sufferers and Kieran and I would like to do our bit to raise awareness for the charity.

“Any funds we raise will go towards Fibromyalgia UK and hopefully a share will be diverted to my mum’s support group in St Andrews. The group has been a great source of inspiration in recent times.”

The Fife Fibromyalgia support group is held on the last Saturday of each month in St Andrews. For further information, contact Catherine on 0844 887 2379 (calls are charged at local rate).

Kieran and Liam have set up a JustGiving page for anyone who wishes to make a donation at www.justgiving.com/LiamandKieran-Mika.
