Smiling through pain: living on-air with FibromyalgiaSaturday 28 July 2012
Smiling Through Pain: Living On-Air With Fibromyalgia Susan Solovic is a successful entrepeneur, best-selling author, and television personality, but she also endures the chronic pain of fibromyalgia. Five million Americans live with from fibromyalgia, facing an array of symptoms that force many of them onto disability. Susan Solovic is one of them, and she’s determined not to let fibromyalgia define her life. "I don't really think it's apart of my identity,” she says. “It doesn't rule or control my life, who I am, or what I'm going to become." This attitude has helped her get through the most painful days, which for her often occur when it's rainy and cold or when she hasn't had enough rest. "Sure you push through it,” says Solovic, “and if I want to have a little pity party and cry a few tears, I'm going to do that, but then I'm going to say, okay that's enough. Let's go on and get on with it." For years, fibromyalgia was dismissed by many in the medical community as a non-illness — or worse, “only in your head” – because it wasn’t clearly understood. Recent developments in brain imaging, however, are revealing specific chemical changes that affect how people with fibromyalgia experience pain. Most people with fibromyalgia learn to manage their condition with a combination of medication, diet, moderate exercise, and stress reduction.
