Tender-point acupuncture for FibromyalgiaMonday 5 August 2013
From About.com's Adrienne Dellwo:
Tender-Point Acupuncture for Fibromyalgia Research Brief A new study suggests that acupuncture at fibromyalgia tender points may be an effective treatment option. The tender points are 18 specific points on the body that doctors may use to diagnose fibromyalgia. Pain in at least 11 of them indicates the widespread pain and tenderness needed for the diagnosis. Previous studies have shown that acupuncture is effective at reducing pain sensitivity and quality of life. In this study, researchers looked specifically at the effect of a two-month course of acupuncture in the tender points. They found improvements in pain threshold (the point at which sensation becomes pain,) pain sensitivity, anxiety, depression, and quality of life.
