Fibromyalgia: Can Probiotics Ease Chronic Pain?

By Breana Noble

Probiotics may help with decreasing the symptoms of fibromyalgia and its chronic pain.

Fibromyalgia is a chronic disease in which muscles, ligaments, and tendons experience pain in addition to fatigue and tenderness, Livestrong reported. Probiotics are the “good” bacteria in the body.

Most people who experience the chronic pain from fibromyalgia also have problems with intestinal bowel syndrome, according to Livestrong.com. Symptoms including diarrhea, gas, and bloating. Researchers think it may be caused by too many unhealthy germs moving into the gut but that probiotics may help with getting the gastrointestinal tract’s microflora back into balance.

ALERT: Weird Gut Bacteria Linked to Digestion, Heart, Obesity, Brain Problems

"Use probiotics to treat the gastrointestinal problems, and I've seen the pain from fibromyalgia get better," Mitchell Prywes, head of the Danbury Center for Pain Rehabilitation told Fibromyalgia Symptoms.

Additionally, scientists speculate fibromyalgia may result from a lack of nutrients being properly absorbed by the body, Livestrong noted. Probiotics help to create a microbiome environment with the proper microorganisms that will protect the gut lining and help it to absorb the proper substances.

Other studies show a link between changes in the gut microbiome and fibromyalgia, according to Chris Kresser. Additionally, other research showed that a majority of participants had leaky gut syndrome and several showed a lack of symptoms. More data revealed that changes in gut flora lead to decreased pain.

Painfully Aware reported that scientists found fibromyalgia patients have impaired immunity at the cellular level and that probiotics have been shown to strengthen the immune system by protecting the lining of the gastrointestinal tract.

As of 2010, 2 percent of Americans were diagnosed with the disease, Livestrong reported. Most of these patients are women. No cause has been established for the development of this chronic pain, though sometimes it does result from emotional or physical trauma.

Other responses to fibromyalgia have included taking medications for pain, depression, and epilepsy, Livestrong noted. Counseling and exercise may provide benefits to patients as well. Changing the diet to include healthier food choices may result in decreases of symptoms.

Nova Probiotics said more research is needed to better understand the effect taking probiotics can have on those with fibromyalgia.
