New Research Project

Looking for a specific gene mutation that may cause ME/CFS

Recently, we have discovered a mutation in a specific gene. This mutation causes chronic fatigue. It is possible that this mutation exists in people with Chronic Fatigue Syndrome since many standard clinical tests would not show any marked abnormality. Hence, we wish to test to find if this mutation may be the cause of CFS in some people. The study is important because it may allow for a treatment to compensate for absence of the protein due to the mutation in those chronic fatigue sufferers who have the mutation. This will, however, require further study in the affected individuals.

We wish to offer testing for this mutation and a related protein in blood following a single blood test taken in the early morning (before 9:00am). We also wish you to complete a questionnaire regarding fatigue and your medical history, if you consent to the study.

The results of testing will be sent to you by mail as soon as possible. Those who test positive for the mutation will be invited to meet one of the physicians involved in the study for an interview. Results will be made available only to the individual tested and not to any other individual. Your confidentiality will be closely respected.

If you may be interested in participating in the study, please contact us and register your interest. We will send you a package containing instructions on having a blood sample taken at your local pathology collection centre, as well as a consent form for you to sign.
