Somatisation Disorder – is it all in our heads?

The Draft Clinical Guidelines for Diagnosis and Treatment of Chronic Fatigue Syndrome have been severely criticised for failure to recognise a severe form of the disease, preferring a psychiatric diagnosis of somatisation disorder. What do psychiatrists mean by that?

www.acponline.org/journals/annals/02jun99/barsky.htm is an article by AJ Barsky and MD Borus published in the Annals of Internal Medicine, titled “Functional Somatic Syndromes.”

freespace.virgin.net/david.axford/letter02.htm is a reply to Barsky’s article by Ellen Gouldsmit.

www.mja.com.au/public/guides/cfs/cfscont.html is the Medical Journal of Australia where you can read the Draft Guidelines.
