Home Assist ProgramsLocal Government Home Assist Programs can be useful for residents. Anyone considered ‘older’ – i.e., people over 50 – have received help, although the frail aged are targeted again. They can provide up to 5 hours cleaning home help, after a hospital stay at a cost of $5.00 per hour. Other Home Assist council services can provide for eligible residents (people who are without support and who cannot afford private services) are handrail installation (consumer meets cost of rail) at similar rates, and also gutter cleaning (own home, not rental, or South Australian Housing Trust, sometimes strata units), as well as small handyman jobs – and plumbing. Community Buses – some councils will provide a pick at the door for people who have medical conditions and are not able to access public transport- generally for older people but each council may have its own priorities, and it is worth a try. Buses generally go to fixed locations – i.e., shopping centres, libraries etc. Trade Registers – councils keep lists of tradespeople who have current insurance in Trade Registers. They are available to all residents, and some tradespeople are supposed to give a pensioner discount. |
